"Breastfeeding can be a challenge but every breastfeed is a success and each breastfeed is a gift for both you and your baby". |
Families sometimes do worry about breastfeeding: "How will I know if I am going to be able to breastfeed?" "Is it OK if my nipples are so sore?" "Is my baby getting enough milk?" "Am I doing it right?" "I want to learn more" |
You are absolutely right to be worried about all of that! So much to think about and you would have heard so many stories about breastfeeding, pain, nipples and sore boobs. So many stories that everything must be about tongue tie or sleep training or just give one bottle.... The list goes on but my guess is that much of that hearsay is not based on what a qualified person can help with. You need the right information for you and let me say that nipple pain should never be part of your own expectations. *Pain with feeding should be assessed properly and mostly relates to small details with baby positioning*. If you would like to know more as you prepare for birth or in the days afterwards; if you wish to understand if you are 'doing it right' then ask for the help of a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). You can contact me or the LCANZ (Lactation Consultants Australia and New Zealand) under the Find a Lactation Consultant section or ABA ( Australian Breastfeeding Association) sites for further information. |
Let me guide you on this journey as the family adjusts to the new baby and learns ‘the dance of breastfeeding'.
I will be there to support you and your choices through whatever you can manage as this is most definitely about you, your goals and your family. Whilst 100% success cannot be guaranteed by any IBCLC, I can offer commitment to working with you as you learn about managing lactation and breastfeeding. As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, in private practice, I have been attending to the care of families as they negotiate the early days of baby feeding, for 18 years, with a 44 yr history of nursing and 39 with midwifery. A belief in a personalised, unhurried and non judgemental approach in helping families as they adjust to this amazing time of bringing their new baby home is what most families need. Home visits and video or phone consultations may help answer the questions that you are concerned about and get you back on track as you grow your baby, 'on the outside'. |
Home Visits:
Lactation Consultant home visits provide a comprehensive assessment in the comfort of your own home and I generally cover the Sunshine Coast from Peregian Springs to Caloundra and out to Nambour Go ahead- check the Services and Contacts pages |
If we grew up in a village then we would know the culture and practices of the 'village people' and we would have seen the women feeding the babies, nurturing them and watched their interactions, helping each other out, in the early days after birth. The process would be instinctive for the parents so there would have been less stress learning and more time enjoying the baby.
New families are often isolated from their extended family and many have never even watched how breastfeeding happens. Extreme marketing measures may seduce new parents into thinking that they need certain products or rituals that may cause a downward spiral away from successful breastfeeding. Reading from a book doesn't tell the whole story; looking up 'Dr Google’ also doesn't necessarily lead to fully reputable references. Breastfeeding is a learned skill. This is where the IBCLC Consultations and Home Visits come in. |
Whilst natural, mothers and babies learn how to make breastfeeding work well; this may take time and may require the extra support from an IBCLC. |
